This project sits on a private road, in a fantastic plot which drops down to the River Thames. Concept Eight secured planning permission which was strongly resisted by local residents, for the original non descript low lying bungalow with a new 3 storey family dwelling, with commanding views onto the River Thames and Hampton Court gardens.
The house consists of a dramatic triple height atrium as soon as you enter the house, which then opens up onto hallways and landings on all 3 floors. Our brief was simple, we were to give our clients views of the River Thames from all the main reception rooms, and allow the house to open onto the gently sloped lawned garden.
Our vision was to create a view of the river from the moment you entered the house, with the use of glass Crittal doors to a central family room. The main living rooms were then stacked around this central hallway with the timber stair set to one side. At the front we have introduced a triple height atrium clad in timber framing the rooflight above.
Carefully curated materials forms the building envelope, with the use of crisp white render, contrasts with the black timber cladding which is a modern take on the local riverside vernacular. We have then added a slate roof and extensive use of glass to the rear with the whole of the back of the house having the ability to open onto the garden and river.
Not only do we like this project, it has also been selected to feature in an international publication featuring 30 up and coming international architects. It has also been on the cover of a national industry publication as well as featured on TV.
Our favourite aspect of the project is the extensive use of timber both internally and externally creating a warm family home that is also inherently contemporary.
The house has been recognised by external industry professionals and has won awards as well as featured in the press. It has been shortlisted for the Daily Telegraph House of the Year award 2019.
