This beautiful site sits in the heart of the East Hertfordshire Greenbelt with unobstructed views across the countryside and down to London. The client approached us with an existing consent for a new build home but felt it did not fully reflect their brief. Our commission lead us to completely redesign the house improving engagement with the landscape, efficiency and excitement of internal spaces and radically altering the facades to create elegance as well as adding a few unique modern features. We also designed a pool house and garage to complement the main house.
The main house is arranged in two wings with family rooms to the North and a formal room to the South. The southern wing is set forward on the site to enable the double height hallway to open up to the rear garden. This features a spectacular two storey high sash window allowing for the owners to enjoy the very special view. The key feature in the master bedroom is a dramatic corner-less lantern window as a modern twist on a traditional turret.
The design takes precedent from elegant Georgian proportions whilst maintaining a contemporary and understated approach to detailing. The material palette of Portland stone, render, slate tiles with bronze metal glazing in a Crittal style gives the building a timeless character.
The landscaping has been designed to make the most of the site and orientation, with a front woodland garden, a central courtyard and an open lawn to the rear. The pool is set central to the wings of the house so it can be enjoyed from all spaces and the discrete pool house is set into the landscape on the south bordering the courtyard patio. This houses a garden room, gym and outdoor BBQ area beside the pool creating a really amazing entertaining space.
